Anxiety & Depression Q & A

What is depression?

Depression is a mental health condition characterized by an overwhelming sense of sadness. Of course, sadness is a normal part of life, and even extreme sadness is normal in instances like the loss of a loved one, divorce, job loss, or another disruptive life event.

Depression is different, largely because it persists even when there is no clear cause. Some additional signs of depression include:

  • Lack of interest in things that once brought you joy
  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia or sleep disruptions
  • Changes in your level of physical movement
  • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt
  • Thoughts of suicide or self-harm

If you notice these changes in yourself or a loved one, seek help from a trusted physician. Thoughts of suicide or self-harm are considered an emergency and should be addressed immediately.

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is your body’s reaction to stress. It involves a sense of apprehension or fear and is a critical component in your fight or flight response. While anxiety is necessary for human survival, a problem arises when anxiety persists even when there is no triggering event.

Some signs that you might suffer from chronic anxiety include:

  • Extreme worry
  • Fears that never seem to ease
  • Excessive fear of certain situations, activities, or objects
  • Repeating specific, compulsive tasks
  • Overwhelming concern about your health or cleanliness
  • Anxiety linked to a traumatic event

There are multiple types of anxiety disorders, all of which can interfere with the course of your normal daily routines. Seek help if you suspect your fears or worries are not normal.

How is depression and anxiety treated?

The process begins with a thorough exam and a discussion of your symptoms. Your practitioner looks for physical or chemical explanations for the way you’ve been feeling. For example, certain drug interactions can cause feelings of anxiety and adjusting your drug therapy can bring relief.

In the case of depression, certain life events can trigger pervasive sadness. There are often ways to find relief through lifestyle modifications, therapy, and other avenues.

Medications sometimes play a role in treating depression and anxiety. However, the HealthStone Primary Care team makes every effort to find a path toward relief that does not rely solely on pharmaceutical intervention. If your needs require specialized care, your doctor can help you find a practitioner to assist you and will remain in close communication with your extended health team as you move through treatment.

The process begins with a quick phone call. Don’t let depression and anxiety change the course of your days and nights when help is available.
